Genesis
“The earth was chaos, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” [a].

Revelation
“The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness” [b]
“The waters that you saw. . . are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages” [c]
When the King comes to reign, “They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light” [d]

The Alpha and Omega, creates the end as He does the beginning. In Revelation, like in Genesis, the earth is in chaos, but the Spirit of God is hovering over the sea of humanity. When it seems as if things cannot get any darker He will make the pronouncement of LIGHT and there will be Light, “the Lord God will be their light.“

When Jesus arrived on the scene two thousand years ago the ones who should have recognized Him as Messiah did not because He did not fit their mold of understanding. Instead He was received by only a few ragamuffins and children. The Jewish scribes, rabbis and priests had the prophetic book of Isaiah, similarly we have the prophetic book of Revelation. Will we, “the enlightened ones,” be similarly perplexed because of our misunderstanding of Him?

Our fascination with prophecy is most often rooted in the desire to know the future. There is a lot of security in knowing what is going to happen before it happens. But I’m not sure that security is the name of the game. If Biblical prophecy were just my crystal ball then I could prepare myself for precisely what is needed beforehand, without needing faith in Him.

But He laid His right hand on me, saying, “Fear not” (Revelation 1:17)

Revelation was long on my list of books that I didn’t like. For me it was a book up there with Job, Ecclesiastes and Hebrews – books I was supposed to like but just couldn’t find it within myself. Over the years all these books have joined my list of favorites, but not before long nights of wrestling with them and sometimes walking away with a limp. The pivotal point for me was to read these books without the intent to master them, but to know the One who authored them. Our Father doesn’t give us the Scriptures to pile up for ourselves religion and theology, but to know Him.
