The Foolishness of God

A Stranger in the Promised Land

EL AL flight

I’m flying to Israel on Thursday. . .

I would say this is my pilgrimage, but then all of life is a pilgrimage of sorts. . . we are strangers and exiles on the earth.

For me this trip will be about seeing the green grass on the hillside where Jesus fed the 5000 [a], and the rocky shore of Galilee where Jesus called Peter Andrew James and John [b]. I want to erase all the fictional images and renaissance art from my mind and replace these pictures with a more accurate one of Jesus, the real person, in the places where He really was and will someday return [c]. It’s not that I need to see the land of Israel to know Him, but that I want to do anything that may help me know Him more. As the Apostle Paul says,

Everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with Him. (Phil 3:8)

. . . and so I embark on my Israel pilgrimage, as a stranger in the Promised Land. . .
