Early last month I was volunteering at HALO Men’s Shelter, and as always I sat with the men during chapel to keep order and for solidarity. Every night of the week a minister from a local church will come and give a half hour message, but that evening no one showed up. My friend Nat, the Men’s Shelter coordinator, made several phone calls, but couldn’t reach anyone to lead chapel. Putting the phone back in his pocket he shuffled over to where I was seated, unceremoniously volun-told me to fill in, and left me to it. Continue reading
