The Simplicity of Christ & The Complexity of Churchianity

Postscript, March 2019: Some of the views I originally shared in this post in 2015 have since evolved, but I want to leave it intact as a marker on my journey. 


I’ve been feeling a lot of discouragement lately, mostly about this thing we call Church. Recently, I was in a discussion with some church folk in which it was clear that most would choose their church traditions over the teachings of Scripture. Each of these individuals claim sola scriptura, but when confronted with the possibility that their church practices have no Scriptural basis, they easily ignored this and insisted on their own understanding and practicality. But none of us, including me, should ever think for a minute that we “religious types” don’t get ensnared in Pharisaical man-made doctrines and damning legalism. Maybe we should be extra cautious to recognize this natural tendency of ours and to say with the Apostle Paul, speaking of his own Pharisaical righteousness, “counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ ” (Phil 3:8) Continue reading
